GOOD STEER

© Lee Kirk

The steer

was long

gone

when his skull

was left

on the roof

of an outhouse

in Wyoming.

My mother,

spry at seventy-five

climbed

to retrieve it

and shipped

it to me

in Oregon.

I named it Sam

and hung it

over the fire-

place: tucked

a red silk

flower

behind a horn.

Every day

when I look

at Sam

I remember how

at age sixteen

I discovered

the art

of Georgia O’Keefe

and under-

stood at once

that women

can.
