Black Cat Blues

by Lee Kirk

A fat black cat

and a thin black cat

cruise the woods,

their gleaming yellow eyes

falsely ferocious

in the morning light.

Two gray squirrels play,

pointedly ignoring

the pantherlike approach

until from two feet away

a cat springs

and lands on air

instead of a squirrel

no longer there

but up a trunk

just out of reach.

The thin cat leaps

is lead aloft

the round cat watches,

too wise for this.

At twelve feet up

the duped cat

grows wiser, too --

edges tentatively

downward, one dark

paw after another,

then jumps to scattered

leaves and black

and silver snickers.
